Question 1

There are many different ways that movies are distributed to the audience. Movies are mainly introduced to the public via trailers and posters but this depends what time of the year it is. This means people atre more liely to spot the trailers on TV during winter time this is because they watch TV more TV and stay indoors because of the weather. However during summertime more people are out and posters are seen on the bustops, buses, taxis and billboards.
Also some cineams do screenings of the movie which gives the opportunity to the people to go and view the movie and give their opinion about it.
It is important for the people who distrubute the movie to be aware of the fact that audience have the power when it comes to judging the movie therefore in order to succeed they need to attraqct their audience in the best possible way. Also the audience might be encouraged to go and see particular movie after seeing some famous Holywood actors in the movie so they will be more likely to go and see it because of it.
When talking about producing the movie there are different institutions such as Universal which can be involved with the movie this also links with the distribution because Universal is a well known big succesful comapny which produced movie such as: four weddings and a fubneral, the boat that rocked, and love actually. The audience might want to decide to see the movie because of this. This also depends on the box office in other words how much money the movie has made. This shows how succesful it turned out to be.
Megafranchise plays a big part to the movie as well. The movie is more likely to be popular once gadgets such as mugs, computer games, mascots, and posters come up. This helps the movie to get popular. For example with Harry Potter the book came out  and it was a huge success along with all the gadgets such as toys, games espeacially the movie was a huge hit this made the audience to go and watch it in the cinemas. After few months the DVD came out and it made even more money at the box office because everyone wanted to have their own copy and watching it again.

Prime Evil

Representation of gender
The extract was screened four times. It opens up with a woman and a man standing opposite each other the rule of 180 degree was used because they were looking at each other while talking. The over the shoulder shot was used to concentrate on the woman who was talking to the man. She seemed emotional and she had tears in her eyes. The connotation of that could be that it is a stereotypical for women to get emotional very easily over things and show it. When the women walks away to her car the camera pans at two people sitting down and one of them responded to woman's action by telling the other man to leave her alone so she can calm down. This show how men are typical and the connotation of this might be that they think women over react to certain things.
The camera cuts from one scene to another where we see a woman in the machine controlling it, it is a typical blond young lady which we can see by the medium close up however she is not seemed as one. In this scene the woman is not seemed as stereotypical because she does the man's job and also this might suggest she is strong and independent.
During this scene we can see a male character all in mud walking past the girl in the machine carrying some wood in his hands it is a medium shot.
A close up on the hand in in the ground and straight away we can see how the male character responses to it his eyes wide open looking rather scared and shocked he uses his body language to alert the female to stop the machine so he can take a closer look at it.
All of the sudden we see a huge animal in this scene attacking the male the female character Abbey takes control which is not a stereotypical and she attracts the animal's attention. This shows how she is fearless and is not scared of anything and the connotation of this could be how women are getting more independent now days and how they start to wear the trousers in the whole process rather than allowing the man to do everything.  There is non diegetic and diegetic sound used this is when the music gets louder and louder to alert the audience of the danger that the characters are in. Also the diegetic sound was used which was the sound of the animal showing his frustration towards the characters. The camera rotates/pans during the fight between the animal and the woman. This is to show how the animal is jumping from one place to another and attacks the human. The camera then focuses on the male character and the medium long shot is used who tries to save the date (hero) by calling the animal over so it can leave the girl alone and he can deal with it. She didn't save the day and the connotation of this might be that she is not as strong as we pictured her to be and maybe there is something stereotypical about her after all.
The animal follows the male character who runs towards the tree. The high angle is used from the male character's point of view. For example while on the tree to show he has the power over the animal which is on the ground attacking him.
The cut jump is used of the male climbing the rope and suddenly in the next shot he is all ready half way.  This shows how editing is used to speed things up and have the audience focusing on whats really important rather than worrying about him going up there slow or fast. The continuity shot was used when the male character slides down the trope attached to two ends of the trees so he can get across to the other end to escape from the monster. Also the connotation of this shot might be that the audience focuse on the man and observe him to see how brave he is.
The next scene takes place when we see few people walking at first we only see few male characters including a guy who wears a pink top and a hat , the connotation of this might be that he is homosexual and other people walking along with him are his team groups. We see the blond woman walking last and the camera only shows her after all the male characters are shown this might suggest that men are taking over the control and are overpowering over women.
Also another example of this is when men are talking and seems like they know a lot about the hidden hand in the ground whereas the lady is not talking a lot.  The camera then rotates around the man in the suit so we can concentrate on him and what he is saying. Two male characters then run off to save the situation which seems to be the guy in pink also. (maybe he is not what we take him for)
Towards the end of the extract there is a scene where a stereotypical woman dressed in more of a evening gown talking to a simple male character inside the shed who looks like a farmer and is hard working. She threats him to make a complaint about someone otherwise she will get him into trouble for breeding the animals illegally. The male characters walks off and picks up the gun where the woman's response is typical a medium close up of her face reveals she is scared  tries to calm the man down however it doesn't seem to work. A high angle is used to show the man standing above the woman who is on the floor trying to persuade the man to stop.

Role of the Producer

The producer has a big responsibility to make sure that everything is going according to the plan , they have to design the call sheets and make sure they are designed properly so everyone knows what they need to do and where they need to be at certain times. Also the producer needs to make sure everyone is on time in the place where the filming takes place. The producer also designs the budget which they have to stick with in order to produce a movie.  They also distribute the movie and report to the production company or to the executive producers.  They turn the ideas into the story in order to produce something which they consider as success.

Hotel Babylon

Representation of ethnicity: The ethnicity was represented in many different ways and different races were shown. Asian male was shown and we could tell he comes from that background because oh his accent which we heard in the dialogue while talking to the british male. There was also other different races who were illegal immigrants and were kept away in the basement in the hotel so no one sees them.

Editing:the editing plays a big part to create a meaning and in this extract few fast cuts were used in actions to make the audience feel the pressure the characters were in at that time. Lighting was bright , natural however in the hiding place there was light used to make the place bright so the audience could see the characters faces.
Camera shots/angles:180 degree rule was used at the beginning of the extract where the police man / detective walked in and spoke to the receptionist showing her his ID. we could see that the lady was nervous and looked suspitious but she didn't show it and kept her face straight to remain calm.
A close up on asian man's face showing his face expression while talking to the british male was shown. The asian character was a security guard which is a typical job for an asian man. He looked like he wanted to avoid the conversation with the other character and he changed the topic. he looked uncomfortable and we could tell this by the look on his face. This could tell the audience a bit more about the asian character and might have something to do with him later on in the scene.
Sound:there was a non diegetic sound used.

Notes on 'Life on Mars'

On thursday's lesson we looked at the clip called 'Life on Mars'. The first time we have seen it we were asked to watch it without making any notes but just to get some ideas about the clip. The purpose of this is to prepare us for the exam.  We have seen it about four times in total.
These are the things we had to look at while watching the clip:

  • Sound
  • Camera shots
  • Costume
  • Setting
  • Editing
The opening of the clip opens up with a busy road and we get introduced to the male character who is laying on the street next to the car. First time we see the character the high angel shot is used and at first we do not see exactly who it is however the next shot which is a horizontal tilt shows the angle of the character on the street. Straight away we can tell he had an accident and it was most likely to be a car accident because we see a car next to him which probably belongs to him. We can also see the cars registration number which tells us what period of time he is in.
The second time we see the character in different situation this time the camera rotates 360 degrease around the character and the place he is in. This is because the audience can see he is in totally different place than he was before and the clothes he is wearing are very different than he had on  before. (the first time we saw him) The costume the character is wearing can be clearly discovered it belongs to 70's and the setting around the character such as cars and civilisation gives it away to the audience who can compare the times he was in before and the times he is in currently in this scene.
The sound used in that scene starts with non diegetic which is the music in  the background while the camera rotates around the character in 360 degrease because the character cannot hear it however it turns into diegetic when the character picks him self up from the ground and walks towards the car where the music is getting louder while the character moves closer. The music played in that scene is from 70's and its played from the casset player which is inside the car. This automatically shows the audience that the character has moved back in time which helps the audience to understand the story line and from the music we can tell what are the times the character is in.
Another scene which takes place in the police station clearly shows what is going on even tho the character is confused because of the changes and the times. The setting of the station shows that the times are different because there are no computers in the office, the sound of the telephone ringing is very old. Also people smoking inside the room shows that the rules were not introduced to them yet about smoking in the building. The office is full of men which shows that women were at home taking care of the kids while men were working to earn money , now days this is very different which shows a lot have changed since then. At that time male were a dominant gender therefore women were housewives.
The editing of the clip is very effective so the audience can understand the story very clearly and it brings the message across to them straight away.

Synergy

Synergy is when two or more faces work together to produce a result not obtainable by any of the agents independently.
There is also media synergy which means different elements of a media congolerement work together to promote products across different media. Synergy works when different elements with media conglomarete products. AOL and Warner Brothers merged in 2000 in order to create the soudtrack for the megafranchise Harry Pottter.
The term synergy comes from Greek word syn-ergos, συνεργός, meaning 'working together'.

Analysis of the Skins clip.

The skins clips represented a range of different shots, such as:
wide shots - which showed the whole settings of the scene making the audience feel involved, from his point of view.
close up of the character brother - showing that this character is relevant to this scene, make the viwers become more aware of the state of mind as this character is disabled.
medium close up of the main character while a voice off screen is happening - to show how he is expressing his feelings and engaging with the audience.
long shot - to show him in a different environment and situation. showing his is an ordinary guy living his life as a normal teenager.

editing - shows to understand the story and speaks to the viewers throughout the clip. it shows the different setting and motions that go along with the story line making it easier for us to understand the whole scene. No sharpe cuts, instead it is smooth and simple which might keep the audience interested with what is going on.
the editing was very clear so it showed the meaning to the audience so they can easily understand what the story is trying to bring across to us.

sound - the background music at the beginning could suggest that it has some relveance to the main character and the story line. the other sounds used were digetic due to the fact that it was to show him in different places to understand what environments he is living in. some examples are in the kitchen, the bus stop and in the class room where kids were messing/shouting and talking loudly.

mise - en - scene - most of the scenes were set up during the day time using natural lights so no studio lights were needed. the mise - en - scene delivered information across to us about what sort of person the main character is by portraying him as a typical teenager. His costume was of a school uniform to show that he is still a student at school which is relvant to the class room scene that is at the end.

the whole clip represents mainly males as the dominant gender because the camera is more concerntrated with them throughout the clip. towards the end of the clip we get introudced to a female teacher at the school which might have a meaning that women are just as equal to men due to having professional jobs, however they are not shown as often as the males characters are.

Evaluation

There are different methods of evaluating the final project these are:

  • video- recorded evaluation where people / objects are shown explaining the project and the purpose of it
  • text - written evaluation explaining without pictures more details about the project
  • pictures/ diagram - showing images of different shots of the movie
  • presentation- different slides of the process
  • commentary - a voice of screen explaining the project in more details while showing different parts of the product
As a group we have chosen to use commentary as our evaluation due to the fact that some of us are not as confident on the screen showing our faces. Therefore commentary will be easier for us to present and show the movie in more details as we will be able to follow the script that we will prepare earlier.

Cranford Analyses

The camera shots used in the episode of Cranford were mainly long shot, close up, and wide shot. The editing was very old styled , dull, no bright colours to show the times they were in and to set the atmosphere. The sound used in the episode was digetic and there wasn't really any background music used apart of the dialogue between the women who spoke in old English refering to each other by Mrs , the cat's sound when choking and the birds singing in the background.
The characters represented in the episode where mostly women and their costumes were long dresses covering their whole body which were not very colourful in fact they were quite dull and boring. The two women that we get introduced to at the beginning seemed to be a working class background due to the fact that they were in the small house which was very dark ,not a lot of lights used and one of them mention she had a cow she treated like a family. This shows that she is an average working class woman , quite poor.
Another character who we get introduced to is a lady who gets carried in some sort of a carry box who seems to be quite bossy the way she speaks to the men who carry her , her talk is very demanding. The camera shot during the scene between the two ladies who are running next to her with the cat in the basket due to the fact that he choked and they needed to get some help , the lady in the carry box is shown from the point of view which could suggest that she belong to the upper class the way she looks down on them while they are running and the way she spoke in a posh way to them.
In the area were the two women lived we see two children who seem to be quite poor the way they look and the young girl carrying perhaps her sibling who was a baby shows that they don't really fit into the picture with the other characters that were represented in the episode.

Analyses

Byker Grove
Is a 30 minutes episode and its Children's Drama. The episode opens with a narrative explaining what the episode is about and is linked from one scene to another introducing new charatcers. After tyhe scene the titles and the music comes on.
Mainly children are the characters and its set in day time which suggests its for children.
The title at the bottom of the page tells a bit of the story so the audience can understand it more clearly.
Through the first few minutes of the episode there is a chinese music which sets the atmosphere and linkes with the picture. The digetic sound is used to explain the scnene even more. The mise en scene shows that we notice straight away its for kids also the sounds are quite gentle and more of a children's type. At the beging of the episode a girl introduces her self stating her age and explains what her movie will be about wqhich doesnt nessesarly represent tyhe episode's narrative.

White girl
It a TV drama or a one of film shown on bbc 2. Opens up with a close up of a girl's bike she is riding it. Along with it there is a piano music played in the background. The film is set in England, cancil state and it represents working class people. The mise en scene represents the area as poor and its shown through the characters clothing. The characters swearing suggests they are low class some sort of chavs.
Visual lang shows the situation of the familly who are running away from tghe dad who is perhaps alcoholic or violent. They are scared of him.
Half way into the scene the music comes along with the picture which suggests freedom when the familly manages to run away and they drive off. The next scene shows the area the familly is moving into which also is poor because of the houses and the characters - tyhe way they were dressed. eg: small girl not wearing any trousers , rabish on the street. the music suggests its an area where muslim people are leaving. From the start the audience get a negative impression because of the setting.

The bill
Its also a TV Drama episode because of showing the audience what happend previously. Unlike other Dramas there is one story shown and how the characters are trying to deal with it. Verbal lang tells us what is going on exaclty. Written text is shown. Verbal lang and the visual lets the audience to understand the story in more details and more clearly.

Analyses Silent Witness

Silent Witness its a series which are shown on BBC. Each episode is 60 minutes long and each represents a story mainly its a crime story. This is mainly viewed by the age of 16 and above younger viewers might find it not suitable for them due to some scenes shown.
The opening of the episode that i have seen was tense and for someone who does not follow the story does not know what is going on in there. At the start of the episode there are no titles shown this probably means that the viewers are well introduced to them from watching them in the past. However the titles appear after few scenes right after 2 minutes of the episode being shown and the title at the bottom of the screen shows the title of the episode to give the audience an idea of what will happen perhaps. We get introduced to the character who is running but he does it with anger and during it we see some flashbacks of him in the army which makes him very angry. Straight away we can tell that this character is clearly upset, full of anger and he was the opening of the episode which the camera focused on for few good minutes so this suggests he will have something to do with the episode later on perhaps the camera might want us to remember his face as he might appear later on but in different light.
When looking at the language that is used in there its quite strong at the beginning because of the anger between the two characters which one of them is murdered just later in the episode along with some tense music to show the audience the emotions and to set some kind of atmosphere.
The scenes take place in 3 different locations where we meet different character so we get introduced to them by each scene as we find out something about them such as the way they dress and speak suggests they are middle class people.Mise en scene sets the atmosphere and really sinks the audience in because of the way its all played out and shown.
As said before there was a tense music used and digetic sound relevant with the scene like in the court when the two characters were arguing. This is done so we can see or hear that the scenes takes place in the court and feel the emotions.
The scenes are all set in the day time and the lighting used was very good to perhaps make the space brighter such as in the office where its a building we as an audience want to be able to see what is going on between the characters.

Analyses of the TV Drama

Eastenders

Eastenders is a very popular British TV Drama which have been shown for a long period of time on BBC 1 channel. The episode i have seen recently involves a female character called Ronnie who is terrified about a baby  boy she has stolen of another character called Kat who is unaware of the situation due to be in a shock after her own child past away in a sleep. The whole idea of Eastenders is to keep delivering the drama to the audience who are fascinated by it and to picture how this TV Drama reflects on the viewer's everyday life and what similarities they face.
During the 30 minutes of the episode each time the audience learn and find out new thinks about the characters and their lives they live in.
There are few places such as pub, local houses, the main street used to create the whole atmosphere and to set the mood of each episode depending on the plot that is being followed.
In this episode the scene takes place in the house where Kat and her husband Alfie still upset after finding their baby boy dead upstairs in the bedroom are discussing of moving on and reopening the pub which they own so it can function properly and they will forget quicker about the tragedy that have touched them. During the conversation Kat is very upset and she decides to pack all Tommy's staff who died in the bin bag and brings it to Ronnie who is very uncomfortable about this but at the end accepts the gift.
Another scene takes place in the house which involves one of the characters called Phil Mitchel who is the father of Ben. The police knocks on his door asking for Ben who is suspected of pushing Glenda down the stairs and causing her a serious injury but he does not let them in and protects his son till the end.
Throw the whole episode there is no background music played just at the beginning with the subtitles and at the end of the episode followed by the titles as well. However there is a moment where for few second the radio music is played just outside the pub where Alfie and Kat's father are discussing her health and the state she is in.
There is a natural day light used outside the building but inside it there was some light used to show the characters faces and to make the scene look bright.
The whole episode contained 3 main story lines which are listed above.
