TV Drama analyses

We have covered TV Drama. TV Drama could be:
  • comedy drama
  • potitical drama
  • dramatisation of real life
  • ongoing / specific number
  • series
  • episodes
Media forms and languages

Form - shape or structure usually linked to narrative
Style - the distinctive look of the media text. A particular TV drama often displayes an individual style identified by specific choice in technical codes.
Genre - French word meaning 'sort' or 'kind' used in grouping programmes which may have similar form or structure for example police drama
Conventions - characteristic ingriedience of a specific genre and elements which make it recognisable. May be connected with form, lang, theme, or visual elements,all the soaps share multiple narratives eg: characters.
Semiotics - similar to connotation and denotation. Signs and symbols. Denotation- sygnifiers connotation- signified. Denotation is often literal and connotation is more varied.
Aural language - verbal lang of text but also various elements which go to make up the sound mix eg: incidental music, atmosphere tracks, foley, spot effects.
Visual language - includes technical areas such as camera, lights, mise en scene- obvious overlap.

Media languages
Written language- applicable to print and web where 'copy' is a significant area, any media text in which the written word is features.
Verbal language- clearly high relevant to TV drama. The verbal lang is a significant part of the structure often the vehicle for carrying the narrative lang choice are vital in creating appropriate responses from the audience.
Non verbal language - that conveys through gesture , pose, stance. In addition the term 'blocking' which comes from the theathre is apllicable. 2 and 3 dimension (D) space is included which includes semiotics. The sound is classified as digetic and non digetic depending on if it could be heard by the participiants in the text.

Analyses of Five Days
We have watched the first few minutes of Five Days. It is a TV Programme/ Drama.
Sound Aural language Dramatic music along with the titles (piano).
Aeroplane sound and talking on the aeroplane suggests the plane is moving. The sound is digetic. Heave breathing , music in the background sets the atmosphere.
In the next scene the sound of the cars on the highway suggests the cars are moving fast. The music getts louder in the background. Dogs barking sets the atmosphere and tells the narrative where the characters are and helps the audience to understand a story a little bit more. There is a verbal connection between the scenes.
The scenes jump from one to another and every time the audience get introduced to new characters.
